Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is the only place on mainland South Australia where you may see the elusive platypus. The Sanctuary is also a thriving eco-system where hundreds of Australian native animals flourish. Koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, potoroos, bettongs, and birds, rarely seen outside the feral-proof fence, all live safe and protected at Warrawong.

The award winning Sanctuary was founded in 1969 by Dr John Wamsley, when he purchased a 35 acre dairy. Later, he and his wife Proo surrounded the property with a 2.1 metre high, electrified, feral proof fence. The fence created a safe haven where native animals were protected from introduced predators like cats and foxes. Many consider this approach to be a world’s first.

Experience the tranquil haven of Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary for yourself by booking an animal encounter, behind the scenes experience, show, tour, or camp.

Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary is a serene environment for animals and humans alike. Visit us and experience the best of natural Australia.

Wildlife Wander Dusk Tour

Dusk Tour Event
Dusk tours at Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary showcase Australia the way it ought to be. Before cats and foxes were introduced to Australia, a myriad of native marsupials inhabited the countryside.
At your feet, the locally endangered southern brown bandicoots, and playful potoroos, scamper around in search of food. Brush tailed and ring tailed possums do the same, but in the safety of the treetops. In mating season, the haunting, guttural calls of male koalas echo through the valley, as they search for mates and defend their territories. As light fades, the chance of seeing the shy and elusive platypus increases.
A dusk guided tour at Warrawong exposes visitors to a magical time in the wildlife of Australia. There is no better experience than wandering through this natural environment and watching the native animals undisturbed in their normal routines. Warrawong is a virtual Garden of Eden for Australia’s unique native animals. Think of it as a 28 acre enclosure and you're on the inside. A Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary dusk tour is a truly unique experience.
The tour is suitable for people 6 years of age and older.

Experience the life of a professional animal keeper for a day with the Warrawong Junior Keeper program. Open to children 6 to 14 years of age, this incredible, behind-the-scenes experience allows young animal lovers to feed, pat, hold, and care for a huge range of animals at the Sanctuary.
All children receive their very own Junior Keeper cap, Junior Keeper glow in the dark wrist band, Junior Keeper collapsible water bottle, and a Junior Keeper participation certificate.
The Junior Keeper experience is selfie heaven. However, it’s also serious work. After all, you’ll be dealing with all sorts of wild animals. They hop, fly, slither, and some are just plain creepy-crawly. Being a Junior Keeper isn’t for the faint-hearted. But, it could just be the best experience of your life.
Places in the Warrawong Junior Keeper program are extremely limited. Only 5 children can participate each day, with a minimum of 2 children required to run the program . We keep numbers low to ensure all Junior Keepers experience everything the Sanctuary has to offer. No one misses out.
We’re happy to run our Junior Keeper program any day of the year, provided staff are available. We’ll certainly do our best to work around your availability.
The Warrawong Junior Keeper program is an amazing experience for children and a great “play date” for besties.
If you are not able to book the minimum 2 children, please contact us, as we can probably help shuffle bookings.
