Spirit of the Springs

As the fresh clear spring waters flow to the Gulf of Mexico wildlife and history abound! Called the ‘Blue Waters’ by locals and visited by thousands every year, this is a destination you don’t want to miss while in Citrus County! Many species of fish, both fresh and salt, enjoy the 72 degree water and don’t forget this is a favorite winter home of the endangered Florida manatee.
First we cruise through ‘downtown’ Old Homosassa near the shrimp and crab boats of local fisherman. Watch the pelicans and cormorants welcome them and their catch! Then we pass Little Bird Island which is a small nesting and roosting area for the Great Blue Heron, Anhingas, White Ibis and more. In the cool months we often see our friendly giants, the manatee, on this river cruise. Bring the whole family as this is the most affordable tour we offer!

The Gulf Discovery Tour

Bring the whole family for a tour done ‘Homosassa Style’! What does that mean? Well, Homosassa is a very special place , filled with friendly, quirky people, and an Old World fishing village feel. Things move just a bit slower here, and that relaxed pace translates to less worries along the way!
The word ‘Homosassa’ comes from the Seminole and Creek Indian languages and means ‘place where the wild peppers grow’. From the Wildlife Park and Monkey Island, to the Crab boats and local fisherman, this unique village is a gem on the Nature Coast. Learn about the history of the area while the wildlife around you will amaze!
Running 7.7 miles from the headsprings to the Gulf of Mexico, you may see dolphin, manatee, turtles, alligator, otter and a huge assortment of birds. The Homosassa River is technically an estuary, changing from salt water to freshwater gradually, which means it is teeming with both fresh and salt water fish!
Tricky to navigate, especially around the infamous ‘Hell’s Gate’, this is the best way for an inexperienced boater to take in the sights of the river all the way out to an open view of The Gulf of Mexico.

What to Bring

We provide you with everything you need to enjoy this adventure, but there are a few things that we recommend. Sunscreen and insect repellant are a good idea, as are sunglasses for eye protection. During the cooler months, dress accordingly! Pants, jackets, even a small blanket will help to keep you warm. We provide you with bottled water and headgear for ear protection. Airboats are loud! If you wear a hat, you may have to hold onto your head, so we don’t recommend it!

Tour Information

If you have never taken an airboat ride....get ready for an adventure! You will start at our airboat facility. You will meet our Master Captain and tour guide at the launch location and head out into the waterways of Homosassa for a roaring good time. Keep your eyes open, there is so much natural beauty to take in while you zoom along!
How fast do airboats go?

Racing airboats can reach speeds of over 130 mph, of course this can be very dangerous! Our airboat is much safer....while it is fast, we will not go over 45 to 50 mph. It doesn’t go quite as fast on land as on water, and we always use caution!

What should I expect to see?

Every day is different when it comes to wildlife, and we highly recommend the morning ride if you hope to view wild animals. The variety of birds will amaze you, we often have dolphin sightings, sometimes manatee, and on a very good day, we may even spot a gator or two!!

Where does the Airboat tour start from? / Where do we meet our Captain?
You will meet your airboat captain at 10823 W Yulee Dr, Homosassa, FL 34448 .

Please arrive at the dock 15 minutes before your scheduled tour departs.
Maps and directions to both locations are included in the map links below and your booking confirmation email.
map
How long is the drive from River Ventures in Crystal River to River Safaris in Homosassa?

The drive is approximately 15 minutes from our shop in Crystal River.

Maps and directions to both locations are included in the map links below and your email confirmation.
map
What ages can ride on the airboat?

There is no maximum age for air boating, but relatively good health is recommended. Children should be over 5, and accompanied by an adult.
Can I ride the air boat if I’m pregnant?

This can be a bumpy ride, so we recommend getting advised by your Doctor before you book your Airboat trip.

Do we go out rain or shine?

A small amount of rain will not stop us, but the speed can make the rain more powerful. Long sleeves or rain parkas are a good idea if there is more than a sprinkle. We would also give you the option to reschedule if the weather makes you uncomfortable. High winds, heavy rain, lightning; any conditions that our Captain deems unsafe would cause us to cancel or postpone. People often travel long distances to participate in our tours, so we only cancel when absolutely necessary!

Should I book a reservation?

Reservations are always recommended here at River Ventures. Our boats often fill to capacity and the air boat only seats 6. If you are hoping to take a ride, at least call us so we can let you know what availability looks like. We welcome walk ins, however; we hate to disappoint so reservations are a super idea!
Cancellation Policy:

Mermaids & Manatees - From the Springs to the Gulf

The Nature Coast is steeped in history and our Gulf to Springs tour gives you an interesting perspective and a very relaxing way to take it all in! Sit back, feel the breeze and enjoy the ride as your Eco-guide and Captain educates and inspires!
For hundreds of years these waterways have been home to the elusive manatee and the legends that surround these beasts are amazing. Curious and gentle, these animals often swim near or approach boats. Imagine being a pirate or a fisherman and after many weeks at sea (and possibly too many bottles of rum) you observe a graceful figure moving towards your boat. Between it’s unique paddle tail and it’s surprisingly human-like face these were often confused with mermaid! Even generous algae growth can look like flowing hair from a distance. Legends call them the ‘Sirens of the Sea’, keeping lonely mariners company with their song and their persistence…hence, manatee are members of the sirean family of mammals, which is a very unique and fascinating family of animals….a good portion of their relatives already wiped from the face of the earth. During cool weather a sighting is almost a certainty on this tour! During warmer weather dolphin and birds more commonly make appearances.
Between the Blue Waters and the Gulf we find dozens of islands with an interesting history themselves. Many tell the story of the first people in this area….the American Indian. From the Deptford culture to the Seminoles, many tribes have called these rich areas home for more than 12,000 years prior to De Soto and the Spanish settlers. Raising their families, trading their wares, mounding their dead and creating hundreds of ‘Oyster Islands’ which can be treacherous for even the most experienced boater, the American Indian lived in this area much longer then we have been here! Sugar Cane and even pineapple plantations dotted this landscape after the Indians were gone and tell another story completely! As a sportsman paradise for decades, Homosassa was a favorite stop for Grover Cleveland and Thomas Edison and was put on the map as a top fishing destination. Our guides are well versed on the history of these waterways and have a passion for enlightening even the uninterested visitor!

Available 7 days a week, November -March

*PLEASE BE ADVISED OF VARYING TOUR CONDITIONS*

*Remember that once the weather starts to get warm in March, manatee begin their migration away from the springs and become more elusive. It is very important in the warm seasons to have REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS about how many animals you will see, under what conditions and how long it may take to find them. The COLD weather brings them to the area to enjoy our fresh water springs, but once the Gulf temps begin to warm, the manatee become more difficult to find and tend to be located closer to food sources where the water is not always clear. Also, spring brings hundreds of people to the area hoping for a glimpse of these amazing animals…COME EARLY MORNING if you hope to avoid the crowds. We add tours later in the day as capacity demands, but conditions deteriorate as the day goes on. If you are hoping to see dozens of manatee in clear spring water, than a springtime visit may disappoint. If you need more details about what to expect when visiting us in spring or summer, please visit our conditions page or call us anytime! We are always honest about conditions and encourage our visitors to do their research!

What to bring
Wear your bathing suit...that way you are ready for a quick change into the wetsuit. Bring a towel, most people will bring these along on the boat. Keep season and air temps in mind. If it is cooler, it is a great idea to bring a sweatshirt, jacket or even a full set of loose fitting clothing to slip on after you get out of the water. If you have young children, this is especially important, be prepared with warm clothes....always better safe than sorry! The water here is always 72 degrees, and for some that is quite chilly! Feel free to bring a bag onboard the boat to keep your personal items, but we HIGHLY recommend not bringing anything of value on the boat. During warmer weather most people will wear their wetsuits back to the shop and change into their clothes when they return from the trip. Bring what you feel you need, but no worries we will take care of the details! You are welcome to bring snacks or a cooler, but keep in mind there will be others on the boat as well. On the houseboat we provide you with snacks, hot beverages if desired and bottled water, but you are welcome to bring whatever else you would like to bring!
Tour Info
It is very important to have realistic expectations when it comes to a wild animal encounter! Every trip is different and the experience is unique for each individual. In the cooler weather the animals migrate to this area and congregate here for the protection of the warm water springs; when the weather warms they can move about going wherever they want! These are wild animals and we can not control their migration. Manatee spend their lives searching for food, mates, sleeping and playing....it is hard to predict what state they will be in when we encounter them. The early mornings tend to be the best time to find the animals and best chance of seeing them near the springs where the water tends to be more clear. Remember it is very simple, cold weather = many manatee; warmer weather=lower manatee counts and more time looking for these endangered animals. Even seeing a few manatee is a phenomenal adventure! With our semi-private houseboat, you get 4 hours instead of 3 and this extra hour can make a huge difference. One more hour on the water equals more opportunity to view wildlife and create awesome memories!
Where do we meet?
We meet at our Tour facility in Homosassa, click HERE for a map. You will be checked in, and offered complimentary coffee, tea or hot cocoa. Upon tour time, you will learn about the animals, the eco-system and watch a short video of rules required by the US Fish and Wildlife. This is a wildlife refuge and it is very important that we fully inform you as to what the rules are and how to behave if you hope to view a manatee up close! We will fit you for a wetsuit, and walk you to the dock, where your Captain is waiting for you! After your tour, you can help yourself to coffee and cocoa, use the restrooms, check out the gift shop and view the photos from your adventure!
How long is the Manatee Swim Tour?
The semi-private houseboat in Homosassa is a 4 hour adventure. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARRIVE NO LATER THAN YOUR SCHEDULED TOUR TIME!! Our boats operate on a schedule ....and it can be very difficult to deviate from that for a late party without cutting into your tour time. Don’t miss the boat.....please arrive on time!
Is the boat covered?
Our houseboat is cozy and fully enclosed. It is heated, with a front and back deck, so you can enjoy the comfort of the cabin or the fresh air outside.
How Many People do you take on your boats?
The houseboat accommodates 6 passengers with comfort. Keep in mind that even if your group is very small, we can not control the amount of people on the water. We go on a manatee search and all the tour companies go where animals are found......so after 10 am, especially on weekends, Holidays or during manatee season, the waterways can get very crowded with people. Remember this is the last place in Florida where we can share the animal’s natural habitat so getting out early to beat the crowds almost always ensures a better experience! On the early tour you get out while the refuge is at its quietest and the manatee are still in their most relaxed state. We know it’s early....but it tends to be the best experience for our customers so we don’t mind the wake-up call! If you have a larger group we can put you on one of our many larger boats. We can accommodate a small or very large group.
Do you have a wetsuit that will fit me? Do I have to wear a wetsuit?
We have wetsuits for children to adults up to 5x. These are full wetsuits, 3mm that are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized daily. We do require that you wear a wetsuit while on a tour with River Safaris....this helps for many reasons. The wetsuits keep you warm and buoyant; we must stay at the surface of the water without diving down towards the animals.

Do you provide us with an in-water tour guide?
Yes, we provide a US Coast Guard Licensed Master Captain AND an in water Chaperone, tour guide and photographer! We take pride in having the best Captains and guides in the business and they go above and beyond to ensure that your group has a safe, pleasant and educational experience. Our Captains are all Certified Eco-Tour guides through the Manatee Ecotourism Association in conjunction with USFW.....they do not only know how to drive a boat, but they are stewards for these animals and this eco-system, doing their best to stay abreast of all the latest in scientific research. They will ‘model’ the proper behavior to assure that the manatee are treated with the utmost respect......this is their house, we are just the visitors! Your guide will also take photos, from the boat, underwater and all around. These photos are available at the shop after your tour....that way you do not have to worry about your own camera and it’s a great way to take these memories home with you!
Are there rules we have to follow when we Snorkel With Manatee?
Absolutely! Manatees are protected under the Endangered Species Act and it is quite a privilege that we get to have this sort of encounter! Both the State and Federal Government oversee the protection of these animals and the guidelines get stricter every year. These laws are in place to help protect the animals and they will be enforced here in the Wildlife Refuge, people can be ticketed, fined and removed from the water if behavior is deemed inappropriate or illegal. When you arrive at the shop prior to your tour we will cover all the dos and don’ts so you are fully informed before you hit the water!
How long is the boat ride to the manatee?
We go where we can find animals. In the winter time, that may be a short 30 minute ride to the spring. But when we have warm weather, we may have to look for much longer. In the cold weather we have many in the area and it typically does not take long to find them, but when it gets warm patience is a requirement!

How many manatee will we see?
Please remember that manatees are an endangered species and seeing even one of these majestic beasts is a great privilege. Our tours are conducted in their natural habitat and they are free to come and go as they please. No two days are ever the same, and no two tour times are the same either. Weather, tidal influences and time of the year affect the conditions daily and it can never be predicted just how many manatees you will see. During the colder months we have a large concentration, but if there is a considerable warm spell they will become difficult to find. Because this unique eco-system is a prime manatee habitat, we have a small resident population even in the summer. We never guarantee that you will find or encounter manatee and how many you see is tough for us to predict as well.
Can I Ride the Boat and Not Swim? What if I do not know how to swim?
We always welcome observers and you can often see the manatee from the boat. They sometimes come very close and give you an awesome view! We are only allowed so many passengers on the boats, so an observer does have to pay for that seat. Bring your cameras and binoculars and enjoy the surroundings of the refuge! If you are not a strong swimmer then you must use your own judgment. Are you comfortable in the water with a floatation device? Do you get anxious and upset in the water? We must remain calm and still near the animals, so ‘swimming’ is not as important as being able to relax and float!
Are there age limits?
Children must be at least 3 to go on the semi-private tours, but younger babies are allowed on a private tour. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and very young children must understand enough to be calm and quiet in order to not scare the animals away. Children should be comfortable in the water and parents should stay close at all times for safety. We have wetsuits for all sizes. Please remember to include your young ones (including infants) in your passenger count.
What about weather conditions?
Rarely do we ever have to cancel because of weather conditions...a little rain doesn’t stop us! Because we are on the coast, storms will often move through quite quickly and even if we delay it will not take away from your tour time. Our boats are covered to protect you and your belongings from the elements if you wish to stay dry. If we need to cancel because of inclement weather you will be offered a refund, reschedule or gift certificate.
What is your cancellation policy?
Reservations cancelled five calendar days prior to Tour, Charter or Rental arrival date will receive a full refund less the booking fee of 4%. Any Tour, Charter or Rental cancelled by River Safaris or River Ventures due to inclement weather or other conditions beyond our control shall receive a 100% refund.

Reservations cancelled less than the time period or conditions outlined above will be offered a chance to reschedule (based on availability) or receive a voucher for the Tour, Charter or Rental for the full amount paid. Vouchers have no expiration and may be used towards any Tour, Charter, or Rental. If this should happen we make every effort to notify you as soon as possible. We determine cancellation by the date the reservation of a boat rental is made. Make your reservations early to avoid this happening to you!

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CRYSTAL RIVER AND HOMOSASSA MANATEE TOURS
This is a very common question and we do our best to advise honestly and completely. We only run manatee tours in Homosassa during the winter, though we typically can find at least a few manatees in the Crystal River all summer long. You may find a tour company to take you out in the summer to explore the Homosassa; but we strive for the best experience possible and hate to have disappointed visitors!
Manatees may be more plentiful in Crystal River; however, so are the humans! Crystal River can get crowded and often times people are surprised at the man-made canals, businesses and residential areas that surround the springs. Homosassa tends to be more quiet, less crowded (busy on weekends) and has a more natural setting. Crystal River has dozens of springs so the manatees spread out throughout the Bay; but in Homosassa there is one head spring where the animals congregate when it's cold. Once it is warm, there are virtually no manatees to be found in Homosassa. When in doubt, call for an update on conditions!

Feel free to bring a bag onboard the boat to keep your personal items, but we HIGHLY recommend not bringing anything of value on board the boat. During warmer weather most people will wear their wetsuits back to the shop and change into their clothes when they return from the trip. With your semi-private VIP adventure in Homosassa, you get 4 hours on the water and this can make a huge difference. More time on the water equals more chances to see wildlife and create memories!

How long is the Manatee Swim Tour?

The semi-private VIP tour is a 4 hour adventure from start to finish. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT THAT YOU ARRIVE NO LATER THAN YOUR SCHEDULED TOUR TIME!! Our boats operate on a schedule ....and it can be very difficult to deviate from that for a late party. Don’t miss the boat.....please arrive on time!

Our Guides and Captains are all Certified Eco-Tour guides through the Manatee Ecotourism Association in conjunction with USFW.....they do not only know how to drive a boat, but they are stewards for these animals and this eco-system, doing their best to stay abreast of all the latest in scientific research.

When you arrive for your tour we will cover all the dos and don’ts so you are fully informed before you hit the water!

How long is the boat ride to the manatee?

There is not ‘one spot’ that we go to look for manatee and there is not ‘one area’ that we visit every day, every tour. We go where we can find animals. In the winter time, that may be a short 30 minute ride to the main springs. But in the warmer weather, we may have to look for much longer. In the cold weather we have many in the area and it typically does not take long to find them, but when it gets warm patience is a requirement! With our enclosed houseboat you will be comfortable on even the chilliest winter day!

How many manatee will we see?

Please remember that manatees are a protected and threatened species and seeing even one of these majestic beasts is a great privilege.

Are you comfortable in the water with a flotation device? Do you get anxious and upset in the water? We must remain calm and still near the animals, so ‘swimming’ is not as important as being able to relax and float! What about weather conditions?

Rarely do we ever have to cancel because of weather conditions...a little rain doesn’t stop us! Because we are on the coast, storms will often move through quite quickly and even if we delay it will not take away from your tour time.

The Gulf can get choppy and you may be scalloping in water anywhere from 4 feet to 10 feet in depth (depending on tides and local of scallops). It is strongly advised not to bring children under 5. You are ultimately responsible for your child while out scalloping and if you choose to bring a child, include them in your total passenger count.
SCALLOP TOURS ARE DONE IN THE GULF OF MEXICO WHERE CONDITIONS ARE VARIABLE. THE BEST SCALLOPING CONDITIONS ARE ON SUNNY DAYS AT LOW TIDES…BEST CHANCES AT AVOIDING AFTERNOON STORMS WILL BE ON THE EARLY MORNING DEPARTURES. RAINFALL, WINDS, TIDES, MOON CYCLES AND SUNLIGHT ALL HAVE SIGNIFIGANT EFFECTS ON VISIBILITY AND ROUGH WATERS CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT FOR SOME TO ENDURE. KEEP IN MIND WHILE BOOKING YOUR SCALLOP TOURS THAT WE CAN NOT CONTROL MOTHER NATURE, PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY.

TO BEST INFORM YOURSELF OF TIDES FOR OPTIMUM SCALLOPING AT THE TIME OF YOUR VISIT, FOLLOW THIS LINK….. tide tables

ONBOARD, BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY! You are welcome to bring beer or wine, but we ask that you do
not bring glass containers and dispose of your trash properly.

What to Expect From your Scallop Adventure.....

This is a HUNT! We snorkel at the top of the water and when you spot a scallop you must dive down to
retrieve it and put it in your bag. Being a strong swimmer is a good idea, and taking small children out to
scallop is not recommended. WE DO NOT ALLOW INFANTS ON OUR SCALLOP BOATS.
Ideal conditions would be clear shallow water, but during higher tides water can be 10 to 12 foot deep. This can be much more difficult to manage. NO ONE REACHES LIMIT EVERY SINGLE DAY AND IF YOU WANT THE CHEAPEST, MOST PRACTICAL WAY TO ACQUIRE SCALLOPS, THEN THE SEAFOOD SECTION AT THE LOCAL GROCERY STORE MAY BE THE BEST OPTION FOR YOU. IF YOU WANT GOOD TIMES AND ADVENTURE, THEN COME SEE US!
Your Captain will demonstrate how to clean the scallops, but will not clean them for you. They will have suggestions of where you can go to find someone who will clean them for you if you prefer. Most people choose to do it themselves, it is truly part of the experience! Your car will be waiting for you when you return, so your group is free to go about your day at your own pace.

What are the hours? Full Day is from 8am until 5pm. Half day is 8am until 12:15 or 12:45 to 5pm. Once you have made a reservation we hold the boat for you so if you are not here at the time the rental starts you know you still have a boat. There are no extensions of these times due to your time of arrival. If you reserve a rental and do not show up or call, your credit card will be billed for that boat. The boat must be back at the dock and unloaded by 5pm or 12:15 depending on the rental agreement you have decided on. There are late fees applied to tardy boat returns.
How long does it take to complete paperwork and get on our way? Plan for approximately 10 minutes to complete paperwork. Once that is completed you can drive your vehicle to the boat to unload. The time will vary depending on the number of people ahead of you and how long it takes for your group to gather and board the boat.
Will you provide a map of the river? Yes and we will go over the map with you.
Can we go into the Gulf of Mexico on your boats? Yes. You must stay where you can see channel markers at all times. Marker 10 in the Gulf is the furthest point you can go. During Scallop Season you can go out as far as marker 6.
Why do I have to stay where I can see the markers? In case you need our help! We cannot find you if you cannot tell us where you are located.
Why might I need help? If you have a breakdown or someone on your boat needs immediate medical attention.
What happens if my engine breaks down? Check the troubleshooting information on the map we give you first. Call us and we will go thru possible solutions. If you are still having problems we will send a boat out to assist you. If the problem is mechanical and we can fix it that will happen on the spot. If it is not fixable we will attempt to provide you with another boat (if one is available)or tow you in. We work hard to keep the engines in good working order with regular preventative maintance. 90% of the time it is operator overheating the boats by pushing the engine to the maximum of its ability and continuing to run the engine when it is overheated. At times a renter may hit rocks or other obstructions in the water. If the problem with the engine is due to the operator the renter is responsible for all necessary repairs, towing fees, and damaged or lost equipment.
What happens if I cannot tell you which marker I am near? You will need to call 911 and ask for a GPS location to be called into River Safaris so that we can locate you. You may not under any circumstances be out of the Homosassa River area NO GOING TO CRYSTAL RIVER OR CHASSAHOWITZKA RIVER AREAS.
Will there be life jackets on the boats? Yes all adult vests remain on the boat and children’s jackets will be provided upon boarding. Reminder-Kids age 6 and under are required to wear their vests any time the boat is in motion.

Is it okay to follow the other boaters? NO! Follow the information we give you. Those other boaters may have experience navigating the area in their boat or they may not have any idea what they are doing. And never attempt to follow an airboat.
How far is it to the Gulf? Springs? The Gulf of Mexico is approximately 6 miles and the spring area approximately 2miles. Note: the Scallop grounds are approximately 10 miles from our location and takes approx. 1 ½ hours each way.
Is it slow speed all the way? No, during the winter months there are seasonal slow speed zones due to manatees being in the area. Watch for signs letting you know when you need to go at slow, idle or can increase the speed.
How fast will the boats go? Our pontoon boats are not speed boats. The speed will vary with the amount of weight (people & coolers), the tide and wind direction and skill of the operator. Running at full throttle will overheat the loaded boats engine causing the computer to slow the motor down or stop until cooled.
Will the anchors always stay secure? No, anchors may need to be reset depending on winds and tides especially while scalloping. Always have a person stay on the boat who knows how to operate the boat should the anchors loosen or drag. Also, anchors can become lodged on rocks making them difficult to get out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I pick up the boat? At our waterfront location-10823 W. Yulee Dr. Homosassa, FL.

Running at full throttle will overheat the loaded boats engine causing the computer to slow the motor down or stop until cooled.

TO BEST INFORM YOURSELF OF TIDES FOR OPTIMUM SCALLOPING AT THE TIME OF YOUR VISIT, FOLLOW THIS LINK….. tide tables

What to Bring on Your Scallop adventure.....

You are provided with all the gear that you need other than a personal comfort items, bathing suit and towel. Bottled water is provided and our Captain will have a cooler on board to keep your catch while on the boat. You will
need to bring a cooler to take your catch home with you. Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, snacks....all a good
idea to take with you. ANYTHING THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET WET SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT
