ITINERARY:

This small group adventure encompasses the very best the Red Centre has to offer. Spend three days, exploring three iconic locations (Uluru, Kings Canyon & Kata Tjuta) all wrapped up in one tour.  There is a very good reason why Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.  The park was first added to the list in 1987, when the international community recognised its spectacular geological formations, rare plants and animals, and outstanding natural beauty. Your expert local guide will uncover some of the incredible secrets the Red Centre has to offer with guided commentary, stories, and hidden gems that really bring this place to life. We have comfortable twin pop-up safari tents providing a little more comfort, privacy, and security, or you can try out a traditional swag experience (canvas-covered bedroll).

Day 1: Alice Springs to Uluru

Departing from either Alice Springs or Yulara (Uluru Airport) we head towards Ayers Rock stopping off at Mt Connor (false Uluru) lookout for a view of this mighty red mountain and Curtin Springs for a toilet stop before arriving at our campground for lunch. After lunch, those arriving via Ayers Rock Airport will join the group before we head to the Red Centre’s Aboriginal interpretive cultural centre. We have a chance to learn about the cultural, ecological, historical, and geological significance of this very special national park. With the anticipation and excitement growing we make a short drive towards the base of Uluru as we begin to comprehend the sheer size and magnificence of the giant monolith, getting up close and personal to explore further. Walking to Mutitjulu waterhole we discover sacred rock art sites in family caves and hear the creation stories of Kuniya and Liru as we continue our base walk towards Kuniya Piti.  From here we drive around sacred sites towards Kantju Gorge where we envisage the highest waterfall in Central Australia, (truly a spectacle to behold, even more so when it rains) an elders’ cave, and the world's oldest pantry.  After exploring the world's most impressive rock up close and personal, we retreat for panoramic views to witness one of the most incredible sunsets on the planet, all whilst having dinner cooked for you, to feed those hungry eyes. Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Accom: Ayers Rock Coach Campground (Uluru) Safari Tents (communal campsite facilities). Driving Distance: 350km. Hike Distance: 2-3 km / 2-3 hours.

This is more than just a sightseeing tour; it's a hands-on adventure where you’ll join your guide and fellow travellers to prepare meals, learn bush cooking techniques, and contribute to the smooth running of the tour. It’s an authentic, immersive experience that connects you with the land, the people, and the incredible wildlife that make the Red Centre so unique. Get ready for an adventure that combines exploration, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments in one of the world’s most extraordinary destinations.
Day 1: Alice Springs or Yulara/Ayers Rock to Uluru
Your adventure begins early as we depart from Alice Springs and head towards Uluru. Along the way, we’ll stop at the Mt Connor lookout (often mistaken for Uluru) to take in the views of this impressive red mountain, followed by a quick stop at Curtin Springs. After lunch, arrivals from Yulara Resort, Ayers Rock Campground, or Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ) will join the rest of the group.
The afternoon brings a visit to the Red Centre’s Aboriginal Interpretive Cultural Centre where we dive into the rich cultural, ecological, and geological wonders of the national park. As anticipation builds, we get up close and personal with the mighty Uluru, uncovering its sacred rock art, family caves, and ancient stories on a base walk. Don’t miss the mesmerising Mutitjulu Waterhole or Kantju Gorge with its secret waterfall and the world’s oldest pantry. Finish the day with a knockout sunset and a dinner that’ll fuel those “wow” moments you’re about to have with your fellow adventurers. Meals: Lunch, Dinner Camping: Ayers Rock Coach Campground (tents or bush swags, communal bathrooms) Driving Distance: 460 km Hike Distance: 2-3 km (2-3 hours)
Day 2: Uluru to Kata Tjuta to Kings Canyon
Rise and shine for an early brekkie and a dazzling sunrise over Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Just when you thought Uluru was jaw-dropping, in struts the majestic Kata Tjuta. We’ll hike the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge and be in awe of these massive, otherworldly rock formations.
Next stop? Kings Canyon! Tonight, we’re camping at a super-exclusive safari spot situated on the lands of the traditional Wanmarra community, one of the most remote places on earth (you’re closer to the International Space Station than the nearest McDonalds). Round off the day with a campfire feast and outback stargazing – you’ve never seen a sky like this. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Camping: Private Kings Canyon Campsite - Permanent Tents or Bush Swags (communal bathroom facilities) Driving Distance: 406 km (4.5 hours) Hike Distance: 2-6 km (2-4 hours, weather permitting)
Day 3: Kings Canyon to West MacDonnell Ranges
We head off early to explore the mighty Kings Canyon (Watarrka) venturing into the ancient landscape
and sacred grounds of the Ulpanyali and Lilla people. Get your water bottle and hiking boots ready because Kings Canyon is calling! With its towering cliffs, sandstone chasms, and breathtaking views, this ancient canyon is the ultimate hiker’s dream. Conditions permitting, we’ll set off on foot to explore the canyon, including the iconic rim walk, on the most seasonally suitable section of the trail.
Rest up in the bus as we head back up north, travelling off-the-beaten track via the Mereenie Loop Tourist Drive or Ernest Giles Road and heading out towards the West MacDonnell Ranges for an evening of stargazing at our private bush camp located near Mount Sonder. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Camping: Private West MacDonnell Ranges Campsite - Permanent Tents or Bush Swags (toilets only) Driving Distance: 370 km (4 hours) Hike Distance: 4-6 km (3-4 hours)

Keep your eyes peeled for native wildlife emerging with the rising sun.
Next, we cool off with a refreshing dip in the Ellery Creek Bighole (Udepata in Arrernte). Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and sandy Ellery Creek, this permanent waterhole offers a welcome respite in the arid outback. Continuing our journey, we arrive at Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye). This dramatic 3-meter-wide, 80-meter-high gorge provides a stunning backdrop for our exploration.
Our final stop is Simpsons Gap, another remarkable feature of the Tjoritja West MacDonnells. This significant site boasts a permanent waterhole attracting diverse wildlife and holds cultural significance as the intersection of several Aboriginal dreaming trails. With hearts full of wonder and unforgettable memories, we return to Alice Springs, dropping you off at your chosen accommodation. Relive your incredible four-day exploration and connect with the new friends you've made it along the way. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Driving Distance: 250 km (3 hours) Walking Distance: 3-4 km

ITINERARY:

Day 1 - Section 1: Alice Springs to Wallaby Gap

An early start, and its bye bye suburbia - hello wilderness! The majestic and serene West MacDonnell Ranges are rich in natural wonders and traditional culture and are considered the best in Australia. Our first walk is around a 14km ‘leg stretch’ commencing from the outskirts of Alice Springs. Some beautiful views can be seen, particularly at Euro Ridge. Our walk is taken casually, a fitting way to relax and immerse in the wonder of the region and to ponder the coming 4 days.

Our Ground Support Vehicle will meet us at the picturesque Wallaby Gap and transfer us to our remote camping location within the MacDonnell Ranges National Park. If time permits, we will visit one of the stunning natural waterholes for a refreshing swim along the way. Let the true experience begin as we rest in a region synonymous in the Dreamtime (Alcheringa) of the Western Arrernte Aboriginal people. We will enjoy a Kungkas Can Cook Tasting Platter for pre-dinner nibbles. Kungkas Can Cook is an Aboriginal catering company passionate about bush foods and is dedicated to utilising wild harvested produce from around the Central Desert Region and beyond.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner, Snacks. Accom: Private and remote West MacDonnell Ranges permanent campsite; Safari Tents, or Bush Swags. Driving Distance: approx. 146km. Hiking Distance and Grading: 14 km (Section 1), Grade 4 - moderate to difficult.

Day 2 - Section 8: Serpentine Gorge to Serpentine Chalet Dam

Today we head to the spectacular western half of the Larapinta Trail and onto a 13.4km section of the Larapinta Trail that is only suitable for well-prepared and experienced walkers with a good fitness level. It offers exhilarating views of the high quartzite ridgelines that typify the West MacDonnell Ranges, including Haasts Bluff and Mt Zeil (the highest point in the Northern Territory). If time permits, we will visit one of the stunning natural waterholes for a refreshing swim after a long day of walking.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks. Accom: Private and remote West MacDonnell Ranges permanent campsite; Safari Tents, or Bush Swags. Driving Distance: approx. 94km. Hiking Distance and Grading: 13.4km (Section 8), Grade 4 - moderate to difficult.

Day 3 - Section 10: Ormiston Gorge to Glen Helen Gorge

Today we traverse the low-lying regions surrounding Ormiston Gorge, gradually working our way upward into the back reaches of the Finke River. This area is steeped in traditional folklore, with several important sites being viewed, including 'Yapulpa', which is part of the Carpet Snake Dreaming legend and the Emu and Kangaroo Man Dreaming. If time permits, we will visit one of the stunning natural waterholes for a refreshing swim. Tonight, relax at our beautiful permanent campsite as the sun sets and the colours of the night desert erupt into million-star accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks. Accom: Private and remote West MacDonnell Ranges permanent campsite; Safari Tents, or Bush Swags. Driving Distance: approx. 27km. Hiking Distance and Grading: 11km (Section 10), Grade 3 - moderate.

Day 4 - Section 12: Mount Sonder Climb

An early rise is an understatement (approx. 3 am trek start) as we challenge the 8km climb to the peak of Mount Sonder. The vision of sunrise and the 360° view will leave you speechless - a truly unforgettable achievement. Afterward, enjoy a well-deserved cooked Aussie breakfast at camp. Spend the afternoon at your own leisure at camp or at Ormiston Gorge before enjoying one last evening under the stars of the Milky Way in our beautiful remote campsite. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks. Accom: Private and remote West MacDonnell Ranges permanent campsite; Safari Tents, or Bush Swags. Driving Distance: approx. 64km. Hiking Distance and Grading: 16km (Section 12), Grade 5 - difficult.

Day 5 - Section 9/10: Ormiston Pound Walk to Alice Springs

Regarded by many as the ‘primo’ small walk of the Larapinta Trail, the Ormiston Pound Walk is full of wow factor, wildlife and flora and a grand finale to our walk. A location inspirational to Albert Namatjira, sensational viewings of the Chewing’s Range and Mount Giles - the entry into the Gorge will leave you dumbfounded. After a last picnic lunch at Ormiston gorge, we will pack and break camp for regrettably the last time and begin our journey back to normality (hot showers and life as you know it awaits).

Tonight, after a well-deserved shower, make your own way to one of Alice’s Outback Restaurants (your guide will confirm the time and location), where you can reminisce about the last 5 days and share some banter over a refreshing ale or cool drink.
