Darling Range Twilight Wander

Experience the tranquillity and mindfulness of night hiking as you wander in wonder along the Bibbulmun track in the Darling Range.

You’ll be guided along the Bibbulmun Track from Perth Hills Discovery Centre, through mixed jarrah/marri forest to Manns Gully. As you take steps through the wilderness you’ll notice the tall trees, blooming parrot bush, xanthorrhoea, zamia palms and spots of colourful wildflowers.

Arriving at our ancient twilight granite platform, we’ll enjoy some gourmet nibbles and warming herbal tea as we take in the calm of our surroundings. As we sit immersed in nature, our senses are ignited as we witness the changing hues of the setting sun across the gully! We’ll retrace our steps through the forest to complete our hiking experience.

Terrain: Total hike distance is 10kms, the terrain is quite gentle, with only a few moderate hills.

The Swan View Tunnel, located in John Forrest National Park was built in 1895 and is the earliest tunnel in WA's history. The construction of the railway line was a major engineering project managed by C Y O'Connor. An incredible amount of rocks and rubble were moved to construct the embankments, along with intensive blasting, digging, dynamite and horsepower.

Join Off The Beaten Track WA as we guide you on a 10km hike in John Forrest National Park, through tunnels, past waterfalls and cascades, and then following the ridge until we reach awe-inspiring views of the Perth city skyline!

Discover the Bibbulmun | Kalamunda to Mundaring Hiking Experience

The Kalamunda to Mundaring Weir section of the Bibbulmun Track features steep rocky terrain, flowing waters, granite boulders, picturesque views over the Mundaring Weir and Lake CY O’Connor plus amazing valley views all combined in 18.5kms of hiking gold!

Kicking off at the Bibbulmun Track Northern Terminus (Kalamunda), we will travel through the former golf course that is now known as Jorgensen Park and into Kalamunda National Park. Following the creek line of Piesse Brook downwards we will admire spectacular valley views before we start heading up hill past granite outcrops and boulders and through lush mixed Jarrah forest.

You’ll be rewarded with a delicious lunch at Trails Hub Café before we go back into the forest for an afternoon of delight hiking through Paulls Valley and its awe-inspiring views.

We’ll stop at Golden View lookout to admire the views of the Mundaring Weir before hiking through Beelu National Park to reach the Weir and Lake CY O’Connor. You will marvel in its beauty and after reading the interpretive signage have an appreciation of the work that went into building this impressive structure regarded as one of the world’s great engineering projects. After crossing the weir, we will pass some large granite boulders before reaching the Mundaring Weir Hotel where we can have a nice cold refreshing drink and toast to our hiking achievement!

Fitness level: A reasonable level of fitness is required as we will be hiking 18.5kms at a pace of approximately 3-4kms/her.
Children: Older children are welcome on this experience, however due to the distance (18.5km), a reasonable level of fitness is required. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and we recommend carefully considering their ability to complete the hike comfortably.

Kids Overnight Hiking Adventure

Create special memories with your little one by experiencing a fun filled overnight hiking adventure with Off The Beaten Track WA!

Together you will hike through the Jarrah forest in Mundaring for a short but very sweet 2.7kms to Ball Creek Campsite. After we set up the tents and your homes for the night, you will learn bush craft and camping skills from our experienced guides. As the sun goes down we will light the campfire* and make our tasty damper to go with our delicious dinner. After dinner, out come the head torches for some possum spotting and a short night hike!

On day two we will leave the heavy packs at camp and head on up the Bibbulmun Track for a short hike to Manns Gully for a short basic survival session with the kids before returning to camp, packing up and heading back through the forest for our return hike.

Taking the next step into overnight hiking can be very rewarding and a lot of fun, especially when you share that experience with your child. It’s important to be prepared and feel confident so you have an awesome experience! This is your chance to give overnight hiking a go with our experienced Off The Beaten Track WA hiking guides who will assist you, educate you and answer any questions you may have.

Departing from:

1.00pm Perth Hills Discovery Centre, Mundaring. 380 Allen Rd, Mundaring WA 6073. Free overnight parking is available here. Please aim to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure a prompt departure.

Day 1 – Saturday

After meeting at PHDC (to hand out your purchased food packs or small hire equipment) and loading up ready with your overnight gear, we kick off our 2 days on the Bibbulmun Track by hiking for a gentle 2.7km through the beautiful mixed jarrah forest. Arriving at Ball Creek campsite, your guides will run through camp etiquette and give you a brief orientation before providing you with some guidance on tent site selection and set up.

With camp all set, it is time to lean some bushcraft skills, and forage for firewood. Late afternoon we will get out the stoves and you will cook yourselves some dinner, and with the help of your handy OTBT Guide, we’ll build a crackling campfire (weather permitting) for everyone to relax and enjoy the mesmerizing flames and warmth. Then it’s time for a short but fun night hike, until it’s time to retire to our tents and enjoy a night’s rest serenaded by the chorus of the forest.

Day 2- Sunday 

After waking up to the beauty of the forest you will fuel up on breakfast before we depart for our hike along the Bibbulmun Track to Manns Gully. You only need to carry your small pack with essentials for this 5km return hike. At Manns Gully your guides will lead a basic survival session with the kids.

Back at Ball Creek camp we will have lunch before packing up and retracing our steps back to Perth Hills Discovery Centre, arriving mid-afternoon. You and the kids will finish with a huge feeling of achievement, having completed 3 hikes, as well as conquering an overnight experience.

About the Accommodation: Ball Creek Campsite – Bibbulmun Track, with shelter, picnic table and drop toilet.

Arriving at Ball Creek campsite, your guides will run through camp etiquette and give you a brief orientation before providing you with some guidance on tent site selection and set up.
With camp all set, it is time to lean some bushcraft skills, and forage for firewood. Late afternoon we will get out the stoves and you will cook yourselves some dinner, and with the help of your handy OTBT Guide, we’ll build a crackling campfire (weather permitting) for everyone to relax and enjoy the mesmerizing flames and warmth. Then it’s time for a short but fun night hike, until it’s time to retire to our tents and enjoy a night’s rest serenaded by the chorus of the forest.
Day 2- Sunday
After waking up to the beauty of the forest you will fuel up on breakfast before we depart for our hike along the Bibbulmun Track to Manns Gully. You only need to carry your small pack with essentials for this 5km return hike. At Manns Gully your guides will lead a basic survival session with the kids.
Back at Ball Creek camp we will have lunch before packing up and retracing our steps back to Perth Hills Discovery Centre, arriving mid-afternoon. You and the kids will finish with a huge feeling of achievement, having completed 3 hikes, as well as conquering an overnight experience.
About the Accommodation: Ball Creek Campsite – Bibbulmun Track, with shelter, picnic table and drop toilet.
